ABOUT DENTURES

WHAT ARE DENTURES?

At their core, dentures are designed to be full replacements for missing teeth. They can be easily taken out of and put back into your mouth, which people often find convenient. While it's true that they don't necessarily feel exactly like your natural teeth do, they're an effective way to improve your smile - and your self-confidence along the way.

TYPES OF DENTURES

There are two main types of dentures for you to choose from depending on your needs - full and partial. With full dentures, they're placed in your mouth AFTER any remaining teeth are removed. With partial dentures, the dental appliance itself rests on a framework that attaches itself to your natural teeth.

WHAT IS THE FOR COST OF DENTURESS

The overall cost of dentures will usually vary depending on the type you get and even who you choose as your dental provider. On average, "low cost" options will typically run between $300 and $500 per denture, while a complete set of upper and lower dentures will cost between $600 and $1,000 on average.

DOES INSURANCE COVER DENTURESS?

Yes - in the United States, most dental insurance plans cover some or even all of the cost of dentures. Always consult with your dental insurance provider directly to make sure you understand exactly what is covered and what isn't before making a decision.

HOW TO PAY FOR DENTURESS?

If dental insurance isn't an option, third party financing may be available to help you pay for dentures. Some dental practices also offer payment plans to help you cover the cost of the procedure and the dentures themselves over a longer period by way of smaller and more manageable monthly payments.

BEFORE DENTURES

WHO NEEDS DENTURESS?

Many people need dentures - like those who usually hide their smile because of missing or damaged teeth, who struggle eating certain types of foods, or who have red or otherwise swollen and bleeding gums.

WHEN DO YOU NEED DENTURESS?

Experts agree that dentures may be needed if you experience chronic, severe toothaches or if you continue to lose two or more teeth after some type of tooth loss has already occurred.

ADVANTAGES OF DENTURESS

In addition to a dramatically improved appearance (and the boost in self-esteem that comes with it), dentures can make it easier to eat specific types of foods again, can help prevent further tooth loss and can help ward off the effects of issues like gum disease.

ALTERNATIVE TO DENTURESS

The two main alternatives to dentures to be aware of are implants and bridges. These will definitely look and feel more like your real teeth, but the cost will also be more than dentures. The benefit of this approach, however, is that implants are also not removable - so there really won't be any significant change to your normal oral care routine. Likewise, not everyone is a viable candidate for implants in particular so always consult with a dentist before making a decision.

WHAT ARE THE LIMITATIONS OF DENTURESS?

Dentures are great for many people, but they do come with certain limitations. They may slip and/or slide in your mouth, for example, and you may have difficulties with pronouncing certain types of words after you go through the treatment process. It's also important to note that dentures are not indestructible, despite popular belief. You still need to take care of them to make sure that they don't get stained, cracked or otherwise broken. Likewise, you will want to make sure to have regular checkups to confirm that they're fitted the way they're supposed to be.

DURING DENTURES

WHAT ARE DENTURES MADE OUT OF?

The base of partial dentures is usually made out of a chrome-cobalt framework that itself is intended for strength and retention. Partial and complete dentures are then created from a gum-colored acrylic base, with plastic or porcelain teeth sitting on top.

HOW LONG DOES A DENTURES TREATMENT TAKES?

Taking measurements of your mouth (and removing any remaining teeth) is a process that will usually require several weeks (and multiple appointments) to accomplish. Once you are fitted with your dentures, it can take several follow-up appointments after that to make sure that everything is proceeding exactly as it should be.

ARE DENTURES PROCEDURES PAINFUL?

Most people do not find the denture procedure itself to be painful, though it is not uncommon to experience some discomfort in the weeks following it as your mouth adjusts to your new dental appliance. You may also experience increased saliva flow.

WHAT ARE 3D & DIGITAL DENTURES?

Digital dentures are those that have been 3D printed using a totally FDA-compliant, biocompatible monolithic material. They can be used in a short-term "try out" capacity, or can be your long-term solution. For many, this is a viable way to reduce the cost of dentures, along with the total amount of time required to finish the procedure itself.

CAN I CUSTOM COLOR & SHAPE MY DENTURES?

It is definitely possible to custom color and shape your dentures to support the precise look you're going for. This is a conversation that you need to have in-person with your dental professional, however, to help make sure you understand all of your options.

AFTER DENTURESS

DRINKING & SMOKING WITH DENTURESS

While people may experience difficulty eating and drinking certain types of foods after getting dentures, this usually subsides with practice. You shouldn't smoke after getting dentures, but then again you shouldn't smoke in the first place.

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR DENTURESS?

The major thing you need to know about caring for your dentures is that it is recommended that you brush and soak them every day. Not only does this help prevent any type of permanent stains from developing, but it's also the key to maintaining positive oral health. Don't use toothpaste, though - use specially formulated denture cleaning tablets.

HOW QUICKLY WILL I ADJUST TO DENTURES?

The average amount of time it takes to fully adjust to dentures is something that obviously varies depending on the patient in question. In most cases, people fully adjust to their new dentures in a few weeks or less. Immediately after the procedure you will likely be placed on a diet of soft foods, but this too shouldn't last more than a few weeks.

WILL DENTURES AFFECT MY APPEARANCE?

Generally speaking, dentures that were properly fitted shouldn't actually change the shape of your face. They may, however, if you explored custom shaping options as outlined above. Dentures will absolutely give you that perfect smile you've always seen for yourself, so you'll probably be doing a lot more smiling than you're used to.

HOW DO DENTURES IMPACT MY SPEECH?

If you suffered from speech-related issues in the past due to loose or missing teeth, those issues will probably be gone post-dentures - making that a positive impact to your speech. Sometimes people experience difficulty with pronouncing certain words soon after the treatment has been completed, but this usually goes away once you've had a chance to get used to your new dentures.
